Backflip

I’m in a sports session, and we’re trying to do a backflip. I keep only doing it halfway. I rise above the ground a little, but my leg doesn’t go fully behind my head. It lifts up, but I fall back down.

An instructor appears and explains some theory, saying things like, “Do this, do that.” They hold up a target for me to kick my leg toward, and I give it a try. Then, they leave.

Now, on my own, I attempt the backflip again. I kick really hard and go up high—really high. At first, I’m scared. I’m in the air, thinking I’m going to fall, that I’ve done something wrong or dangerous. But I keep going with the flip, and suddenly, everything slows down.

Time slows down so much that I’m in mid-air, completely off the ground, yet I feel entirely in control. It’s like a scene from a slow-motion movie. I can control my movements in the air. How is that possible?

As I begin to descend, I even signal to the people around me that I’m going to make a graceful, artistic landing. And I do, landing smoothly on the ground.

What just happened? I’m amazed at what I’ve done, unable to believe it.

Finally, I was awake.
